Meeting Virginia

From Helen, Georgia the Tin Zen Den found its way to Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Park. Located on a mountain, the park has sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and temperatures ten degrees cooler than our last campground. It is laid out a lot like a small airfield, with one long street and 46 campsites facing the beautiful mountains. Although not as inexpensive as Top of Georgia, certainly more beautiful. Like TOG, this airstream park has a clubhouse, as well as nice laundry facilities. The grounds are nicely landscaped and there is a small apple orchard and waterfall below the camping area.  The hosts and residents are also very friendly, inviting us to enjoy live music our first evening, and an ice cream social and movie at the clubhouse, on our last.

Our neighborhood for two nights

My Mini Cooper Roadster, Austin has been a fantastic sightseeing vehicle when we have set up our "apartment" at the camp and are ready to do some exploring.  Even though we had a little rain drizzling, it didn't take away from the beauty and fresh air we enjoyed while we had the top down.

Sights along the Blue Ridge Parkway
There is a quaint restaurant at Mabry Mill on the parkway which serves a nice breakfast and lunch. The mill has various settings of Appalachian life such as a Sorgham press, blacksmith shop, and moonshine distillary. The mill was built in 1903 and is one of the most photographed structures along the Blue Ridge Parkway. My phone died as I was attempting to take my own treasured shot. I guess now you will have to go see it for yourself :)

Water power for the mill was provided by this system of troughs

  1. Years ago we camped near Helen, GA. There is a bike shop in town that will take you and your bike up to the top of the mountain near the AT and you can ride back down a dirt road. If I recall it was about 15 miles. Gayle nearly wore out a set of brakes.

We saw the Airstream park but, sadly, were shunned due to our lack of an Airstream, go figure.
